| Abstract: | General thesis: a reduction in the proportion of the labour force engaged in agriculture as an indication of progress is not necessarily borne out by the Ghanaian experience, because while there is every evidence that the percentage of population engaged in agriculture is going down, there is no evidence whatsoever to support the view that productivity in agriculture, more particularly in food farming, is on the increase. The absence of a green revolution, the addiction to the old age practice of scratching the face of the earth with a hoe and other inhibitive factors are serving as a severe constraint on the Ghanaian economy while population continues to grow at a rate of more than 2.5 per cent per annum.
