Abstract: | The agricultural potential of the Bantu Homelands has been calculated by the Department of Bantu Administration and Development in its five year plan for the period 1966 to 1971, in terms of 1963 figures, at approximately three times that which was actually achieved in 1961. Because data concerning the geographical distribution of soils and climatic conditions as regards quantity and quality, are practically non-existent in South Africa, this article is aimed at explaining the principles of planning the development potential on the basis of certain sample areas. These areas were selected in Natal, the Northern areas and the Western areas. The appendices contain data concerning successively Region 1: Nkandla - Region 2: Hluhluwe - Region 3: Ngutshana - Region 4: Sekwati - Region 5: Makonde - Region 6: Sauls-poort - Region 7: Gamodimola. |
