Abstract:An examination is made of certain aspects of conjugal behavior in order to determine whether 'modernization' (social change, generally derived from Western models and leading to non-traditional patterns of economic and social behavior), particularly the adoption of non-traditional marriage customs, could result either in the continued erosion of the position of; women or in an increase in freedom and an improvement in social status and self-image. The data presented are drawn from surveys carried out between 1965 and 1971 in Ghana, Upper Volta and Niger. Sections: Sources of data - Comparability between samples - Socio-economic characteristics - Age at marriage - Choice of spouse - Types of marriage - Divorce and widowhood Polygyny - Marriage and child-bearing - Conclusion. Notes, tables, figure. Appendix: methodology. Sources to appendix.
