Abstract: | Traditional education was complex in character and blended ritual ceremonies with social activities in the initiation of the young into the various phases or their development. The harmonious workings of this system and its sociological significance are considered in this study of eleven ethnic groups in Nigeria: the Hausa, Fulani, Chamba and Kanuri, the Edo, Yoruba and Nupe, and the Efik, Ijo, Igbo and Tiv.
