| Abstract: | This article which deals mainly with the Shona group, the Zezuru around Salisbury, is based on an analysis of the Zambesi Mission Records which cover the period between 1698 and 1933 and on some letters from African and European correspondents. The documents suggest 'that more recent developments brought about by urbanization European legislation and other factors represent not so much a revolution as a continuation of tendencies set in motion by the early missionaries'. Introduction - Christian and pagan villages -Prerequisites for a Christian marriage at Chisha-washa - The negotiation of a Christian marriage - Conclusion of a Christian marriage - Later development on missions - Stability of Christian marriages - Conclusions. |
