Abstract: | Foumban city is a folk-town whose population is 22,863 (1976), and which is the capital of Department Bamoun of l'Ouest State. In border to approach the urban society the writer describes three big festivals, which were performed on the whole urban scale and whose festivities covered the whole city. These three festivals are analyzed: -id al-adha, which is the festival of the sacrifice performed on the 10th of Dhu'l-hijja in Islamic calender on the basis of Islamic doctrine; the welcome rite for the return of King Bamoun, which was held in the traditional procedures for the King Seïdou who had visited Paris to cure his eye disease and who had returned home after two months' absence; the protestant marriage rite, which is essentially a rite of passage in personal life, but also held on the large scale of the town because the bride's father was a Minister of Cameroun. The rite process is summarized. Main text in Japanese. Ref., notes, tables, figures. |
