| Abstract: | In spite of many studies on the Land Apportionment Acts in Rhodesia, a broad interpretation of the history and political significance of the apportionment of land is lacking. This preliminary review has been made in this context. The apportionment of land did not begin with the Land Apportionment Act in 1930 as a form of land segregation had existed since the provision for Reserves by the Matabeleland Order in Council of 1894; under this Order the Gwai and Shangani Reserves were created for the use of the Ndebele whose lands around Bulawayo had been taken from them by the white settlers after the defeat of Lobengula. The development of land policy and apportionment of land is described in the article. Notes. |
