Abstract:For several reasons a number of governments in the Third World require their highly educated youth to spend a year of service to the nation after they leave the university. Hence in Nigeria the National Youth Service Corps started operating in 1973, and has since become an established part of governmental and student planning. Focus in this article is on the impact of the one vear's service on the participants themselves. Have their orientations and attitudes been altered as a result of their work? And if so, in what ways? Have these changes been conducive to national integration? Notes, tab.
