Abstract:Development studies have recently undergone a substantial change of emphasis, with attention shifting from the urban scene to the rural milieu. This article focusses on nonfarm activities in the rural area of Central Province, Kenya. It provides a fairly comprehensive interpretation of how the rural nonfarm sector functions, taking into account both economic and social considerations: employment, activity structure, linkages, the 'export' component, the role of the family, and entry characteristics. Notes, tab., French sum.
