Abstract: | Unemployed school-leavers are potentially among the most important strategic groups in African countries. Purpose is to present and examine empirically a middle-range theory about a body of attitudes that constitute the social psychological backdrop for behavior, those predispositions which tune the person to selected options and responses in concrete situations. An effort is made to move from narrow conceptualizations of youth problems to a more comprehensive approach that may reveal some of the complexities of adaptive processes and patterns Three basic ideas have inspired this exercise in theory-building and analysis of school-leaver problems: 1. Macro-sociological analysis - 2. Symbolic interactionism - 3. Historical perspective. Notes, tables. |
