Abstract: | The author's conclusion is that for a nation that is serious1y pursuing the course of peace, freedom and prosperity through justice and that is dedicated to contributing to mankind's happy future in Africa and the world over, through an approach that is human and colour-blind, the university's role is not catalytic, but part and parcel of the unfolding change. While nourishing the intellectual spirit, the university must fulfil the role of an instrument for the achievement of national goals and objectives. It must assist in the organisation of attitudes within society, vis-a-vis other societies and help give them direction. It must assist in providing a regulative force to the moulding of new national allegiances and personal dispositions, and also, with Government, improve all skills and other resources at the disposal of the nation. The university's influence is obviously an important determinant and regulative force in the tempo of change and indeed in the achievement of success by Africa's leaders. |
