Abstract:The University of Higeria fulfils its obligation of Adult Education through the Extra-Mural Division. Before the outbreak of the civil war, the Division in co-operation with several government ministries, voluntary agencies, co-operatives and the University faculties organized continuing education programmes, off-campus tutorial classes, University Evening classes. After the civil war the Division recognized the important role adult education can play in national reconstruction and development and made various contacts with Government Ministries and Agencies. The Faculties of Education, Social Sciences, Art, and the Extra-Mural Division co-operated with the Social Welfare Dept. in launching a Council of Social Services in Nsukka Division. To help rural housewives adjust to changing social conditions the Division, in co-operation with others, organized women extension projects. The Division also investigated the problem of the idle primary school leavers in Eastern Nigeria in a survey covering the period 1956-1960. Table.
