Abstract: | Economics played an important part in the movement for African nationalism. The exploitation of African resources by European powers with its concomitant denigration of African personality evoked the resentment of the African elite. Four topics are discussed in this paper: 1) the contributions of leading American Blacks to the cause of African economic independence; 2) the African's reactions to the evils of colonialism and the various economic manifestations which were largely part of the political agitations of the time; 3) the changes resulting from the above, the European reaction to the nationalist pressures and the salient factors in the African's ideas and programs to remedy the situation; 4) the outlook for African economic independence.
