| Abstract: | For most of the 1970s Kenya has been faced with serious balance of payments difficulties. During 1980-83 the deficit on current account has averaged K£ 309 million, equal to nearly 12% of gross domestic product (GDP). In an economy such as Kenya's, with the value of trade equivalent to more than half the GDP, the state of the balance of payments cannot fail to influence the performance of the economy. In fact the availability of foreign exchange has become the binding constraint on the further growth and development of the economy, and this has a direct bearing on poverty, basic needs and employment. From this perspective the author examines Kenya's balance of payments problem and the policies needed to deal with it. Notes, ref. |
