| Abstract: | Outlying data points have the potential to cause major difficulties in discriminant analysis. The present paper proposes a modified M-estimator discriminant analysis procedure that performs better than the usual linear model procedure when outliers are present in the data. The procedure is demonstrated by showing that in the period from 1952 to 1977 Egyptian economic development can be divided into three separate sub-periods. In addition, the use of prior probability information and data sets containing more than two groups is considered. - App., fig., note, ref., tab. |
