Abstract: | In French-speaking Africa, banks are at the cross-roads of economic development. Their role is extremely varied and intricate and they assume it very realistically, in deference to the sovereignty of the states where they are established. This role is both traditional and specific. One major characteristic of the action of banks in this part of the third world might well be their contribution to 'the dynamics of development, through their financial engineering, their support to new undertakings and the seeking of solutions that take account of the social and economic environment, the weight of experience, and former achievements. Sections; Legislation - Definition of the word 'Bank' and banking business - The banker's reponsibility in cash services where cheque payments are concerned - Commitments of banks by signature - Commercial banks and credit operations in the agricultural and industrial sectors - Conclusion. |
