Abstract: | South African government information efforts in the United States depend increasingly upon building a network of Americans prepared to present the apartheid regime's case. Apart from more traditional lobbying techniques, those involve sponsored visits for well-disposed individuals, the cultivation of opinion leaders and groups, the placing of material in the press and on the electronic media, and the building of informal contacts. These efforts can be expected to be intensified in view of the Carter administration's less cosy official attitude to the government in Pretoria. Two of the most interesting organizations operating in the US on behalf of the S.A. government and related institutions - the South Africa Foundation and the Washington law firm of Collier, Shannon, Rill and Edwards - are discussed in the article. |
