Abstract: | After a short description of the early history of China's involvement with Africa and Mao's revolutionary writings the author exposes Peking's interest and activities in Africa since 1949. Five periods are to toe discerned: the first period (1949/58) is characterized toy supporting the anti-imperialist struggle. From 1959-1962 the main sphere of interest was West and Central Africa (Congo crisis). From 1962 to '65 interest centred mainly on East and Central Africa. From 1965 to '69 China consolidated its position in several African countries. After 1969 links with African dissident groups were strengthened. China emerged as the biggest Communist provider of foreign aid (Tanzam Railway). Ref. |
