Abstract: | This paper is an examination of the question of the persistence of peasant society under capitalism. More specifically, it is an examination of the exploitation and differentiation of the Hausa peasantry of northern Nigeria under British colonial rule. The paper commences with a brief review of the relevant literature and then proceeds to trace the interaction of merchant capital and peasant society and its effects on the development of the primary unit of production and reproduction in Hausa society, the Gandu, pl. Gandaye. Notes, ref., tab. |
