Abstract: | This paper looks into how cash crop growing contributed to, social differentiation and class formation in Gatanga, a location in Kandara, Huranga District in the Central Region of Kenya. The aim of the Colonial Administration to develop Kenya through White Settlers, to prohibit Africans to grow cash crops so as to supply the White Settled areas with labour, the impact that white settlements and the colonial Administration had on the Africans and their economies is examined. In its last decade, the Colonial Administration created a cash crop growing loyalist landed class to serve as collaborators.
