Abstract:In recent years Bophuthatswana has had a fair measure of success in agricultural production. This success must be largely attributed to the attitudes and the approach of the Tswana farmers towards agriculture. There are clear indications that a new breed of middle-class farmer is emerging. The article analyses this process in the following sections: The present situation in Bophuthatswana - The number of people that can be accommodated in the agricultural sector - Fallacies with regard to development - State-owned land - Tribal areas - A development strategy for tribal areas - The role of the co-operative in the tribal situation.
