Abstract:There is a clear need for an evaluation of investments in agricultural research on the same basis as those of other investment ventures. As is indicated by the present study, the returns to past investments in cocoa research in Nigeria have been very high. Such high returns suggest gross underinvestment in cocoa research, and possibly in other areas of agricultural research as well. The need to correct such an anomaly can only be taken seriously on the strength of empirical studies of the present type. Sections: Introduction - A review of cocoa research in Nigeria - Theoretical framework - Sources, treatment and limitations of data - Empirical results and policy implications - Conclusion. Notes, ref., tab. For commentary and an extension by Tamonopriye Agiobenobo and Akpan Ekpo, see: Nigerian J. Econ. & Soc. Stud, - vol. 23, no. 2 (1981); p. 225-232.
