| Abstract: | The authors, engaged in a study of indigenous industrial entrepeneurship, have interviewed over 200 firms with more than 10 employees. The sawmilling, furniture, printing, rubber processing, singlet making, tailoring, and baking industries were selected as having substantial indigenous participation, being found in all regions of Nigeria, and having a wide range of firm sizes. This paper reports the findings for one such industry-sawmilling. It has been selected for presentation because it is one of the largest and most important industries, has a large number and percentage of indigenously owned firms, and presents an opportunity for a study of the development and of obstacles to expansion of entrepreneurial capacity in modern industry. The paper is divided into five principal parts: 1. The structure of the industry; II. The structure of the individual firms; III. The entrepreneurs; IV. Growth of the firms; V. Conclusions.
