Abstract: | Considering the prospects for the future development of forest industries in Nigeria, this paper indicates that sawmilling, wood-based panels and certain secondary wood-based industries offer the greatest opportunities for immediate development. However, the basic economic and technical conditions for general development exist in the country. From the discussion of the considerations which should form the basis of a forest industrial development policy for the country, the major conclusion is that a rationalization of the industry is urgently required. To its assignment a 'Forest Industry Development Council' comprising government and industry representatives is suggested. Bibl., notes, tables, summary. |
