| Abstract: | Although the introduction of small-scale mechanical rice processing in Nigeria is fairly recent, the new technology has been widely adopted. This, in turn, has created considerable interest in the economic study of mechanical rice processing. The objective of this study is, therefore, to compare costs and returns to millers in Kwara and North-Eastern States. The study covers 53 mills in Kwara State and 31 mills in the North-Western State, The analysis shows some disparities in the economic performance of the mills. In Kwara State, average rates of return to millers vary from about 2 per cent to 46 per cent. In the North-Western State, the average rate of return is about 61 per cent. Variation in the quantity of paddy available for processing accounts for most of these disparities. Among the major problems of the industry are seasonal and irregular sypply of paddy, lack of storage facilities, and, shortage of spare parts. Ref., tables. |
