Abstract:Community participation has stimulated building activity in the Gezira but has greatly lowered its quality. Political interference and pressure groups have biased the distribution of services in the area. Architects' participation has gradually declined, and their standards and advice have by and large been ignored. Only a few strategies have guided the provision of community facilities in the region, and no comprehensive policy on this exists. This paper focuses on assessing the participation by the community and architects in the provision of school buildings. The situation concerning other facilities, e.g. health and community centres, has similar characteristics but is less extreme. Fig note, tab.
