Abstract:Report of a research project on iron workers and regional history in the Rukwa region, southwestern Tanzania. The report is set out in terms of the three major phases through which the project passed project statement (1979); narrowing the focus I (1980-1981),- Mzee Stefano Malimbo, master smelter (1982). This is followed by a new research statement (1985). In the forthcoming phase of research, findings about the iron industry will be tested by discussions with up to ten master smelters and leaders of communities with a strong and recent commitment to iron working. Attention will also be turned to brideservice, which is coextensive with the area of the ilungu furnace smelting tradition. Ref.
