Abstract: | This paper highlights the dependence of industry on imported technology and the absence of locally produced basic chemicals in industry even though the raw materials are available. The employment of unqualified people without university degrees is normal, in order to keep salaries as low as possible. Government-run industry has better training plans for its staff, both locally and abroad, than private-sector industry, while attractive salary offers from oil-rich countries are syphoning off qualified personnel. The lack of communication between industry: and the universities is described, and practical suggestions are made for closer and more beneficial collaboration, which would help to solve some of the former's problems and finance research by the latter. Both parties could benefit from 1. the provision of well equipped workshops and laboratories, the setting up of advisory committees and the organization of conferences and visits by university students to industrial enterprises, and 2. the design of teaching courses in the universities in which expert staff from industry are involved.
