Abstract: | It is fairly well established empirically that imported technological processes which are in use in most of the industrial establishments of developing countries are rather inappropriate. This inappropriateness has led to the prevalence of varying degrees of excess capacity at the industry group level which may be quite substantial for the manufacturing sector as a whole and indeed for the national economy. An economic-statistical analysis of questionnaires completed by manufacturing establishments in Kaduna employing 10 or more persons during 1976 reveals that because most industry groups do not make proper use of the factors of production, they tend to end up with low capacity utilization. Another contributing factor to low capacity utilization is the poor state of infrastructural facilities. Kaduna being located rather far from the sea-ports and linked by inefficient railway and road haulage systems, suffers an added disadvantage vis-a-vis industrial towns that are closer to the sea. The survey indicates clearly that excess capacity represents a real and potential source of growth that can be harnessed for the purpose of development. Notes, tab. |
