Abstract: | An observer, in 1859, described the companies as so many little republics, each independent of the rest, and having its own officers, laws and customs. To serve one's company was the 'most indispensable duty of the citizen'. With the onset of the colonial administration, the companies lost their military role. The article analyses the riot of 1932, which was mainly the product of the division of opinion within the elite segment of the community as to how best to react to the Gold Coast Colony (Legislative Council) Order in Council of 1925, which authorized the town to elect one municipal representative. This analysis reveals the hollowness of the British policy of indirect rule. Notes. |
