Abstract: | The objective of indirect rule was to evolve for Africans a new politico-administrative structure baaed on the fusion of those things that were considered good in the African political and administrative systems with carefully selected ideas and institutions from British political and administrative experience. This ambitious programme could only be implemented if through empirical study it was possible to determine precisely the nature, structure and animating principles of African political systems. This article examines the application of anthropology to administration in Southeastern Nigeria in the period before 1929 and in the period between 1929 and the Second World War. Notes. |
