Abstract:This article discusses the little known Native Reserves (North Nyasa) Commission of 1929, set up to recommend suitable land to be reserved for African use in the North Nyasa district. It examines the context within which the Commission was established and the relative positions of Africans at the time. It also assesses the Commission's recommendations pertaining to the economic development of the area and demonstrates how, although these recommendations were fairly progressive, North Nyasaland remained poor and underdeveloped.
