Abstract:Africa's role in both world politics and economics has not changed greatly in the post-colonial era; its environment continues to be disturbed and its resources continue to be exported to maintain the economic growth and political dominance of the industrial states. Nevertheless, the contemporary: period of economic and political change and instability in the international system offers new prospects as well as problems for Africa. In this essay the authors seek to describe and explain the dilemmas and opportunities posed by the emerging world order for the political economy of Africa; they conclude by examining trends and predictions about Africa's future in the world system.
