Abstract:Mary Hall, Olivia Colville and Charlotte Mansfield undertook travels in Africa which brought them also through Nyasaland in the early 20th century. The details of their journeys, published by these ladies - who as far known never met each other - are capable of assisting us to a somewhat fuller understanding of life - or at least expatriate life - in Nyasaland early in this century. Purpose of this article is to examine the ways in which their writings tell us, or remind us, of some details of life in the country at that time, particularly where those details are in contrast to present-day circumstances. After a brief general introduction on the Protectorate in 1905-1909 follows a little information on Miss Hall, Mrs. Colville and Miss Mansfield. The remainder of the article deals with their journeys in Nyasaland. Notes.
