Abstract: | The travels of Du Chaillu in the Gabon region have received much less attention than the exploits of his more famous contemporaries. Yet his achievements were by no means negligible: he was the first European to visit any portion of the Gabonese hinterland since the early seventeenth-century adventurer, Andrew Battell. After some information about his youth, the author gives a description of his travels during the period 1855-1865. Then the author gives an answer to the following questions: Why did Du Chailly become an explorer and what techniques did he employ? What were his relations with Africans and what images of them did he convey to his readers? How did he compare with other explorers? What did he achieve of lasting value? Map, notes. |
