Abstract:This bibliographical survey is intended to cover sources for all maps charts, plans and sketches of Africa, and of its parts, that are published in the period from 1500-1800 as parts in atlasses, in single sheets or sketches used to illustrate travel and exploration accounts. A literature search: yielded only three existing short lists besides Yusuf Kamal's Monumenta Cartographica Africae et Egyptae and the Johannesburg Exhibition of African naps. Yusuf Kamal's work covers the early classical periods, There has not been an incentive or need to compile list of maps of Africa of this period There is however a wealth of material available in bibliographies of cartography, in catalogues of library collections, in early world Atlasses of the period, and lastly in current periodical literature on the subject, from which material on African can be extracted. The survey of the material available will be presented under the headings: Manuals and bibliographies, catalogues of library collections, early African historical treatises and travel accounts, texts on cartography and current periodical sources, sources for biographical information about cartographers. References; maps.
