| Abstract: | The seven letters written by the Franciscan brother Pieter Farde and other documents relating to him afford a glimpse into the interior of Africa in the late 17th century, showing the astounding extent of communications and trade within Africa on a continental level. The author analyses the contents of Farde's letters and attempts to give a plausible explanation for the questions they raise. Notes. |
