| Abstract: | The divergent histories of the two broad categories of commercial banks in Nigeria - the indigenous banks and the expatriate banks - explain the differences in their lending policies. This is examined in the sections: Loan policies and pattern of loan security - Maturity of loans. Examination of the origins of the concentration on short-term financing and exploration of the methods of improving the effectiveness of bank finance in meeting the longer-term financial needs of industry in Nigeria are carried out in the sections: Basis of lending attitudes and loans to idustry - Criteria for lending. How bank funds are supplied is exposed in a section: Interest rates; their influence and determinants. Finally the sections: External factors influencing bank lending - Suggestions and conclusions.
