Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to ascertain the role of the central bank in the process of monetizing the Ethiopian economy and its contribution to economic development. The role of the central bank has been progressively changing as it has endeavoured to stabilize the economy from externally caused fluctations while both avoiding inflation and providing for the orderly expansion of the money supply, Ethiopia presents a unique case of banking and monetary policies in an underdeveloped economy.
