Abstract:A review of radiocarbon dates which have become available over the past three years for the more recent archaeological sites south of the Cunene and Limpopo Rivers. The radiocarbon determinations are assessed within the broader context of economy and society and using as framework the broad physiographic divisions of southern Africa: the Western Plateau and Plateau slopes, the Cape Middleveld, the Southern Cape, the Eastern Plateau slopes, the Southern Highveld, and the North-East Plateau The new set of dates has been particularly important for understanding the nature of hunting and gathering and herding communities in the arid western regions of the sub-continent; the succession of lithic industries in the south-western interior; the geographical extent of the earliest farming communities in the south-eastern coastal areas; the succession of ceramic industries in the east; and a revision of concepts of early state development and trading contact with the east coast.
