Abstract: | The four main objectives of this article are: to determine the extent to which mechanisation has occurred on maize farms and how this has changed the production process; the extent to which mechanisation has brought about changes in the level of employment and in the characteristics of farm workers; the causes of mechanisation; arid whether any decline in employment on farms has led to a rise in unemployment. The article is based on a survey of 61 maize farms in 6 magisterial districts of the Western Transvaal. Fig., notes. |
