Abstract:Objectives: to assess the impact of using oxen power and low cost accessories (Kaban-yolo one and two tool frames, ploughs, planters and weeders) on smallholder income levels; to determine the optimum loan package that would be adequate for the oxen mechanisation system; to determine the suitability of the Kabanyolo ox equipment in Busoga and subsequently in other regions with similar soils; to evolve simple optimum farm plans for smallholders in the region to maximise: incomes using oxen and the available farm resources. The cash crops of cotton and coffee have been incorporated into the traditional system without critical economic analysis to compare their economic returns in relation to other enterprises; to determine new labour bottlenecks that are created by using ox-drawn equipment for ploughing, weeding and planting.
