Abstract:Land classification involves subdividing the land into recognizable units on the basis of selected diagnostic features for the purpose of meaningful deductive generalisation and with a view to effective evaluative study. Several methods have been developed in the last few decades to achieve satisfactory classification of the land. One such a method currently in use is the parametric method. This paper describes applications of the parametric method to the classification of the terrain in the upper Ofiki Basin of Oyo State, Nigeria, and highlights the advantages of and problems in the practical application of this method. It also suggests aspects of the technique which need to be further investigated before the purported level of credibility and utility can be attained. Fig., ref., tab.
