| Abstract: | Hajj Mukhadram (pseudonym) exemplifies the role of a type of tribal leader - the 'cultural broker' - in the transformation of his society. Through a case study of Hajj Mukhadrem, the present author examines political change in a Bedouin society, the 'Aishaibat tribe, a sub-unit of the 'Ali Ahmar tribe of the Awlad 'Ali, located in the northwestern coastal zone on the northern edge of the Egyptian Western Desert.
