Abstract:This study, which is just a preliminary study, starts with a brief account of Ghana's socio-economic structure (and of the status of the unemployed within it); in order to explain why it is that a significant number of young people appear to place great emphasis on securing wage employment and to examine the political consequences of widespread failure, the author analyses the total social context which alone makes their behaviour understandable as rational. Notes, diagrams.
