Abstract: | Two issues dealing with national youth mobilisation schemes for training and service in rural development. The first issue is devoted to descriptions and appraisals of programs and approaches in separate African countries. Such programs run the gamut from national service schemes designed to train and use out-of-school (and unemployable) youth to university and post-university service schemes aimed largely at making the knowledge and skills of the well educated available to deprived rural areas. The second issue is mostly devoted to the international inputs that have been made to these schemes and to the insights that cross-national comparisons and outside perspective afford.
