Abstract:The present paper presents the results of an attempt to examine the supply and demand of farm labour in a section of Nigeria where clear evidence of too many people on too little land, on the surface, could easily lead any casual observer to make out a case of surplus labour or disquised unemployment. The paper is based on a larger farm household study carried out in south-eastern Nigeria in 1976/77. The problem of agricultural development is shown empirically to be not only that of adequate supply of land, but paradoxically includes labour shortage. Such micro-level studies are essential for a genuine understanding of the interrelationship between population and land resources. French summary, notes, tab.
