Abstract: | The new pressures on Rhodesia are: 1, Since April 1974 Rhodesia has three potentially hostile neighbours, and only one 'safe' boder: Mozambique offers a special challenge by virtue of its commitment to support armed opposition to minority government; 2. Since March 1976, the breakdown of talks with the A.N.C. lead by Joshua Nkomo proved beyond doubt, that direct negotiations between the Rhodesian Front and the nationalists could not hope to produce agreement; 3. Since April 1976, Dr. Kissinger let it be known that the U.S. was determined to avoid a repetition to the Soviet-Cuban involvement in Angola, by ensuring the negotiated transfer of power in Rhodesia; 4. The growth of violent black protest within South Africa 'urges South Africa to seek a rapid solution of the Rhodesian problem, to enable it to concentrate on internal difficulties. However, the activities of the Rhodesian Front government, elected overwhelmingly by the white electorate, have evinced no strong criticism from the whites. Notes. |
