Abstract: | This study explores some of the various roles assumed by the American elite press with regard to the Arab-Israeli conflict during the period from 1966 through 1974. Particularly the extent is examined to which the elite press serves as an independent source of public opinion on Middle East issues. Consequently, this study is limited to the editorial opinions found in selected American newspapers, and is directed toward research objectives: 1 To gauge the nature and extent of editorial attention given by major segments of the American elite press to the Arab-Israeli conflict during the 1966-1974 period. 2. To measure and evaluate the editorial opinions concerning differing actors involved in the Arab-Israeli conflict expressed by elite US newspapers, both individually and collectively, across issues and time.
