Abstract:Assessment of economic development in Angola since independence focusing on the pitfalls of national reconstruction. Factors which condition the process of development, such as the colonial legacy, the civil war, and South Africa's destabilization policy, are dealt with, and it is suggested that the lack of manpower, part of the colonial legacy, is a major bottleneck of development. The politico-economic aims of the MPLA government are summarized and an analysis is presented of the oil industry, external trade, internal development, and regional cooperation. It is shown that the oil industry is the main pillar of Angola's economy. This makes the economy vulnerable to world market trends. Angola's internal economic development gives rise to greatest concern, as the bulk of the population suffer from the deficiencies of the production system and distribution network. Notes.
